The mess is the result of various theories mixing up sources from very difference categories in the earliest strata of early Christian literature / evidence. Apples need to be compared to apples. Oranges need to compared with oranges. Lemons need to be compared with lemons. At the moment much of mainstream biblical scholarship is dealing in a fruit salad.
