You have to understand that these societies have to grapple with the fall of a city, and the ruins that existed that most likely made up these stories. After the marib dam collapsed in the 6th century, ruined cities scattered the areas that the inevitable muslims wouldve experienced. The answer to why these cities and communities collapsed wasnt because of most likely the economic and agricultural collapsed, it eventually turned into a justification to fear gods wrath. Islam is very clear that these old ruins were the result of angering God.
I always view the Sodom and Gomorah stories as that, how does a culture deal with some ruined city near them or in their territory when they left no understandable trace for why that city died. I'm not sure what event could've spawned these ruined cities, but I think that specifying a specific cataclysmic event isn't something that can be definitively proven.
