I assume the reader knows already the association of James and Mariamne with the Naassenes:
Now, what is curious is that usually Mariamne (i.e. Mary Magdalene) receives special knowledge by the risen Jesus (think about the episode in the Fourth Gospel of the noli me tangere).
But then: was the risen Jesus James himself?
In a sense he could be the twin of Jesus, as he was his brother. But there is already someone who is named 'twin': Thomas called Dimymus.
Hence the episode of the finger of Thomas is designed to deny that the risen Jesus was Thomas, i.e. James! Since James/Thomas was not the risen Jesus, then the catholics are reassured: the risen one who gave the gnosis to Mariamne was not James/Thomas. The Naassenes are confuted.
These are the heads of very numerous discourses which (the Naassene) asserts James the brother of the Lord handed down to Mariamne.
