Evidence for an anti-demiurgist tradition about James:
Hegesippus also casts James as a judaizing icon: he is Just in virtue of the his radical observance of the Law, hence making virtually James a "brother of Jesus" according to the same rules given by Jesus:

..only with a variant: the "God's will" is for Hegesippus the Law given by YHWH, implying that the supreme god is YHWH.
In *Ev, on which Mark is based, there are not really carnal brothers of Jesus, but only mere tempting hearsay about their presumed presence there out. And surely for Marcion the observance of the 'God's will' able to make one a 'brother of Jesus' is not the radical observance of the Torah, but the more radical antinomianism.
Hence I am assuming the following course of events:
1. James was the perfect anti-demiurgist, hence the high praise of him in the Gospel of Thomas.
2. the Judaized Jesus had to be an enemy of James, just as the anti-demiurgist James had to consider a judaized Jesus as one "out of himself".
3. The original rivalry was between the Judaizers and the anti-demiurgist James.
4. Given the extreme utility, for Judaizers, of introducing a carnal brother for Jesus, then the Judaizers judaized James himself in the role of brother of the Judaized Jesus.
5. The memory of the radical rivalry between the Judaizers and the anti-demiurgist James couldn't be eclipsed, so it was transformed in a partial rivalry between the gentilizing Paul (and Jesus) and the now judaized James.
6. The anti-demiurgist James was replaced by the anti-demiurgist (invented) Simon Magus.
7. the anti-demiurgist Mariamne was replaced by the anti-demiurgist (invented) Helen.
In short, the witness of the original anti-demiurgism, i.e. James from the Gospel of Thomas, would have been transformed in the witness of the more conservative tribal ebionism: James the Just per the Torah. And even more than that, in the carnal brother of Jesus.
