While he may have lost the domain, it was actually the content that was modified, which is a separate issue. The altered content included malicious code, with images linked to CGI scripts.
It’s also possible that some organizations buy up unused domains, copy the original content to their own server, and replace parts of it with their own materials. This way, they can retain the original traffic and redirect it to their malicious content ..
