Mark undoubtedly cut the ending short. I think Luke is closest to the original. However Luke 24:13 an on seem like later addition. I believe that Matthew was copying Mark until Mark's end. Where Matthew gets its final material, I don't know; perhaps oral tradition.

Whatever came afterward, I think it is clear that Mark did not want the 12 disciples to have any reward or the honor of seeing the risen Jesus. Yet the empty tomb and the two unidentified men provide very little in the way of evidence for a resurrection. Some resurrection stories must have existed prior to Mark's gospel.
