Tertullian repurposes Adversus Marcionem
- I think that that is likely
Tertullian repurposes Adversus Marcionem to make it seem Luke is Marcion's gospel. Fine. But the text didn't original compare Marcion's gospel to Luke, but Matthew. You can still see the original source material peak out at critical junctures because the editor was too lazy to make certain original discussions between Mark and Matthew "work" as a Mark versus Luke comparison (the discussion of marriage for one, chapters 4 - 7 another, the "antitheses" originally being identified as everything that came after Matthew 5:17 is yet another).
- Yes
I can't even see the Marcionite gospel coming second because there is John and Papias reporting on Mark, in a form whose ordering disagreed with Matthew, being written before Matthew. To me, only in a universe which ignores the Patristic reporting (KK, KO, the rest of this ilk), can there be any doubt that it was universally agreed upon before Irenaeus that Marcion's Mark came first.
- I agree re Matthew and Mark
- But I don't follow how you get you get "Marcion's Mark." You need to provide a premised argument for that.
