Christian Texts and History • Paul's text in the context of the Marcionites

I am starting this thread in an attempt to better frame the question of the Pauline writings with respect to the Marcionites. Or perhaps more accurately to examine the text at the early time than our received form. This is in response to what I saw as an uncontrolled or perhaps better stated as ill defined parameters from a fantastic poster here (whom I greatly respect) on the same subject which annoyed me, even though many of his conclusions coincide with my own.

To this end I will be sharing my reproductions of the text in as close a form to what was in the ten-letter form at the time the Marcionites broke off and froze the text they used. The reproductions tend toward the minimalist very much on purpose. One cannot analyze the relationship of Paul and the Marcionites from text not part of their corpus. Even with lacunae and some disjointedness, we get a pretty good picture of what they knew. (I did most of these half a decade to a decade ago, so could likely use some revision.)

Key Points:

1) Paul the person or really legend should be considered separately from the writings. But when his legend is considered with respect to the Marcionites, it should be confined to what the Marcionites themselves perceived as Paul. Remember there is no one unified Paul legend out there, but many contradictory ones.

2) The Pauline texts I will be concerned with is exclusively the ten-letter collection, whose connection to Paul appears even in Marcionite for to be entirely the use of his name for authority. The question we will look at is does it represent Marcionite thought, or does it represent something else?

I am asking that people refrain from commenting or asking questions on this thread until after I post the text and links to the full reproductions (I am making PDFs and put up on google docs), probably about 6 or 7 posts. At that point I'll open it up to Q&A and free discussions. I have a number of things going on in my life, so it may take a week or two to open it up. If you want to ask me anything just PM me.

Thank you.
