Did this scheme derive from Collins? If so, what does the "(?)" represent next to Simon Magus? I'd be inclined to replace "Simon Magus (?)" with the "Unknown Author of the Apocryphon of John"Collins then counts a third anti-rabbinic group, the Gnostics:A three-sided struggle took place in and around Judaism during the first two centuries C.E. Two of the wings were Christianity as an anti-philosophical religious movement, and syncretism with Hellenistic philosophy such as Philo of Alexandria’s. A third wing had a militantly anti-rabbinical tone; this comprised many of the Gnostic sects, which went so far as to incorporate Yahweh as one of the demons or as the evil demiurge responsible for the ensnaring material world (Jonas, 1963).
A scheme looks something like this:
Rabbinic Judaism Hellenistic Judaism Gnosticism Christianity Example Hillel the Elder Philo of Alexandria Simon Magus (?) Paul
The winners in this struggle in the following centuries being rabbinic Judaism and Christianity.
