A statement about "the best explanation for the literature that we have coming out of the early period of Christianity" like the above can be criticized as not providing nearly a complete enough explanation of the literary remains that may stand in need of some kind of explaining.
Are there literary remains that do stand in the way of some kind of a historical Jesus as the best explanation for the literature coming out of the early period of Christianity? I can't think of any off-hand, though that's purely my own subjective evaluation.
