but what if John didn't know the synoptics and they followed it?
if a Thomas-like sayings collection existed it could support this (you're probably thinking what the heck. idiot. yep)
How about John doesn't know the synoptics but it knows Thomas and likes it not one bit, 'that darn sayings collection'
Some of John seems to refute Thomas-like sayings with a final jab at Thomas for good measure
So that would work if those sayings hadn't been worked into a synoptic like gospel yet and been made 'acceptable' leaving John curiously naked of sayings
Where this theory may flunk is the gospels generally refute a Thomas-like interpretation of the sayings. you'd get false positives
you'd have to find smoking guns or it would flunk, especially a saying not found in the synoptics. have i tried to do this? nope
(John could still be 'from' a Thomas friendly-origin if it was originally some sort of 'revelation' or 'treatise' without sayings and it was the redactor who didn't like Thomas)
