Since the Machaerus locale had a palace as well as extensive fortifications, there is no difficulty in a harmonious understanding. The stay at Machaerus, which included the birthday festivities, was likely an extended stay, it would not be a day trip. However, this idea only arises if there is a harmonious understanding of Josephus and Mark. One would have to assume that Mark's (/Matthew's) report is factually correct (and not just a literary narrative) regarding the reason or course of the murder, and that Josephus' report is correct regarding the place of the murder.

Quite a few good articles on Machaerus.
