All my reading so far suggests that nobody has really controverted Lightfoot's assumption that the Syriac version had no doctrinal motivations.

That is surprising to me, but that's what I see so far.

It looks like it wouldn't be too crazy for me to take the observations in this thread, contextualize them in the discussion of the Syriac recension, and explain a hypothesis of a Valentinian origin of this particular edition's editing in Greek (before being translated to Syriac). Seems like an idea that should be recorded somewhere less ephemeral.

It would make sense to get a look at Jack Bull's thesis first, which undoubtedly is a landmark.
