Christian Texts and History • Re: Whatever happened to ... the "Journal of Higher Criticism"?

That article on Paul and Apollonius was published without my permission. The writing is mine but not permission to publish it.

On 9/24/23 I wrote R. Price submitting a paper I DID want published, making an important case from Nabataean materials for the existence of a heretofore-unrecognized reign of an Aretas V in the Nabataean kinglist ca. 69-70 CE, and proposing that could be the "Aretas the king" referred to in 2 Cor 11:32. In that email below my signature my email had, "----- suggested I send a copy of this paper (attached) to you, which is a rough outline of an argument that the christian apostle Paul and Apollonius of Tyana represent independent tradition trajectories from a common origin", but I did not include the Apollonius paper in that email.

On 9/25/23 Price accepted my Aretas V paper--the crafted one I did want published and had submitted for that purpose: "Esteemed Greg, Thanks so much for this wonderful paper! Not being a complete fool, I certainly do want to publish it! It will be the centerpiece of the issue after next! It is a great honor!"

Price added in that email, "Is your paper on Paul as Apollonius available? I'd dearly love to see it!"

On 9/25/23 I replied with an email with the Paul as Apollonius paper attachment, "Attached is my paper outlining (a "prologemenon") an argument that Paul was Apollonius."

On 9/26/23 Price replied, "Wow! May I publish this one, too?"

On 9/27/23 I replied to Price: "I am reluctant to publish the Apollonius one as it stands, because so much need[s] to be supported, argued, and so forth. As it stands it is more of an outline for a book, and it covers such a range with many points that need to be backed up and supported. But after the Aretas V, which is an important one, is published, kindly by you, I could work up something revised from that piece for an article for JHC. Or make a try at a rewritten version of the present article if it seems that can be done short of a book."

No communication from me since altered that status in any way--no permission to publish the Apollonius paper, no further communication to me about it, I was not told it was going to be published. In a recent amicable inquiry from me regarding the Aretas paper which is accepted for publication and is in the pipeline for publication, I asked and Price assured me I would receive a proof of that article before it goes into print in the next issue of JHC after this one which was imminent. No mention of the Apollonius paper.

Therefore I was surprised to see today that my Apollonius article was published without my permission or knowledge. I received no notice or advance proof of it, and only learned of its publication today from reading this forum notice that it has been published.
