This passage seems to be in some manner equating the Son of Man (whomever that may be, as this is not specified) with the Serpent (of Moses, and likely also of Genesis).
Bottom line: Worship the Serpent whereby to attain salvation.
From this perspective I agree that what we are looking at is indeed from the Gnostic camp.
The Creator would only be involved here if the group that originated this train of thought equated the Creation to the Serpent. Which is possible.
